Acts of Kindness – Here to stay or Passing Fad?
Left over turkey, dressing and all the other great dishes from the thanksgiving holidays gets my ‘farm boy’ appetite peaked every year. I actively search or any unfrozen left-over that i can find the next day…and the next day. That appetite holds for about three or four days. Suddenly…I’ve had enough. Take me back to my daily egg omelet and veggies.
I have observed that the thanksgiving holiday atmosphere also brings out a huge dose of thankfulness, gratitude and wonderment about my ‘lucky life’. Sometimes that worries me a bit. Here is why:
- Why more now than other times of the year?
- Am I selfish the rest of the year?
- Do other people worry about that?
- Am I over thinking this? ( I am told I tend to ‘over-think’ at times)
- What should I do about it?
I think I might know the answers. My mother always told me “Build character…”. She would add the other part as needed. Like ” build character for your kids” Then she would often add “To thine own self be True”. She was a great model but sometimes I just didn’t ‘get it’.
My mom could be a bit annoying about things at times. I would come home for thanksgiving and there would often be two or three strangers at the table. We were struggling and she wants to feed the world! (I know you know “what’s wrong with this picture!”)
I viewed something last night that highlighted mom’s teachings. Character is not some thing you do, but rather, who you are. Most of us know that on a certain level. Watch this video and it will take you to a new level. Watch out for this next sentence. You won’t not be able to think about what I have written without going to a new level of intent. People are usually caring and generous but after viewing this video and putting yourself in the mindset of these three people you can celebrate the goodness good people with me. Open the video now.
Hopefully you enjoyed this like I did and hopefully when we hear some knowledgeable mentor or influential friend suggest that we always add “value” to our “content”, we will be a bit influenced by this story. Best value may very well be just letting our character free to guide us without effort.
The writings of Napoleon Hill has always been my business “go-t0” guy. I have been plagued, at times, by the false belief that acts of kindness and helping others was somehow separate from making a living, seeking my fortune, and holding a position. Being yourself and seeing your acts of kindness as just part of who you are is a living experience and not a single act at all. This is one small part of Naponeon’s teachings that I work on…
…no wealth or position can long endure unless built upon truth or justice, therefore I will engage in no transaction that does not benifit all whom it affects. Napoleon Hill
Have an eventful and value-driven day that helps lift up others and yourself.
